Since the 2013 - 2014 school year Wood Dale District 7 has been researching and piloting the use of Digital Portfolios or ePortfolios as a means of collecting and highlighting quality pieces of student work. Furthermore, these ePortfolios are also used as a means of student self-assessment and self reflection. Students learn the value of planning, creating, reflecting and sharing quality pieces of work in order to demonstrate progression in their own learning. By housing artifacts and providing self-assessments and reflections a student/teacher/parent can look back over a period of time and see where the student has shown growth in learning and has met learning milestones.
As we begin planning for a district-wide implementation in 2014 -2015 there are still many discussions regarding platform, procedures, appropriate artifacts, and logistics taking place. The main purpose of ePortfolios is also being widely debated as they can be used for a variety of reasons by a variety of people. For example students can use ePortfolios to collect and manage work, showcase quality work, goal setting, track development, plan and share, self-assessment and reflection. Also, ePortfolios can be used in similar ways to collect and showcase work over a period of time including initiatives and accomplishments.
As with any exciting initiative ePortfolios will be an evolving concept and process that will be tooled and re-tooled as we begin to use them in earnest across grade levels. Stay Tuned!
